replacing clutch 93 dakota sport
I am still in the middle of taking my truck apart. I am having a hard time. I have a 93 dakota sport 3.9L with 4x4 and a 5sp trans. Can anyone give me some insight to what all has to be takin apart to get it out. I have a book but its not telling me everthing that i have come upon.
So far i have had to remove the oil filter, the brackets on both sides the mount from engine mount, front axle, then to trans. still can't get the dust cover out of the way to see in side the tranny.
Question is does the starter have to come off to let alone anything else from around the bell housing?
If someone has a better how to other than a repair book please share.

Here is what I had to remove on my 93 2WD oil filter, starter, disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifolds, speedo cable, clutch cylider hydraulic line, gear shift handle, then of course the driveline, transmission crossmember. You do not need to remove the engine mount bolts, I just supported the motor with a jack when I pulled the tranny on mine. Be carefull when you drop the tail of the tranny as oil will pour out.

I just pulled my transmission back out yesterday (for the 3rd time this year). Here's the run down...
Jack up the front of the truck and take the wheels off, and remove the inner fender wells (makes getting to all the bolts at the back of the engine much easier)
Remove the front axle
Remove the front and rear driveshafts
Unplug the speedometer cable and wiring harnesses from the transfer case, then remove the transfer case
Remove the clutch slave cylinder, reverse light harness, and o2 sensor harness and tie them off out of the way
Remove the oil filter
Remove the starter and 2 brackets
Remove the dust cover
Remove the Y-pipe
Remove the crankshaft position sensor
Remove the shifter tower and cover the hole with a rag (you really don't want anything falling in there)
Unbolt and slide the transmission mounting crossmember back while supporting the transmission with a jack
Remove the bellhousing bolts while still supporting the transmission with a jack.
Navigate the transmission out of the transmission tunnel.

i was hoping i didn't have to remove the front axle. Front of truck is on ramps and the rear is already up on stands. I don't see it getting in the way other than where the u joint is. I have yet to get the y pipe out and the starter other wise most of that is done aready.
A friend of mine worked at a dealer for a while and said that i could once the tranny is ready to be pulled was slide it back do the transfer case sits on the next cross member back and hold the front with a floor jack.
I have bearings laying in my bell housing. dam clutch! I should have paid someone one to do it.

as far as i can tell/see i only have a couple of bolts around the starter to remove yet. the other side i have the bolts out including the dust cover. not sure if there is any more there other then once you start to take the tranny out. I can see that the y pipe needs to come out regardless. how may bolts are there on the tranny side of the bell housing that have to be removed? If you lived near me here in minnesota i would pay you to give a hand.

There are 4 bolts at the top that bolt from the bellhousing into the engine (transmission side). 2 of them on the drivers side hold a mount plate for the fuel lines and wire harnesses that head back that direction. If you take out the starter and those 2 brackets, there are only 2 more little bolts that hold the dust cover on.
Lol, you'll get it. It took me 5 or 6 hours the first time I took my transmission out (back when my truck was an auto). Yesterday I had the transmission out in an hour and half. It just takes practice!

well me and my friend have most of that out now. just have to make sure when we pull it that I didn't forget anything. my book says something about reaching up and un hooking the shifter from underneath. have to push up a boot then push something down and turn it clockwise. I guess I don't have to remove the shifter from the floor pan. still have to find the crank sensor and some of the others. still debating on seperating the transfer case from the tranny. never thought it was going to be this hard for me. o well
