Default 92 dakota major problem

My dads dakota runs perfectly fine when it is cold but after about 10-12 miles of driving it starts to pop and miss extremely bad. After it starts doing this it will barely go 25 mph. If you stop and let it cool down it will run perfect for another 10 miles. Its a vicious cycle........
I have replaced cap rotor and plugs.....dont really know where to go next... Thanks in advance
Chris

Welcome to DodgeForum!

There would be several things I'd check (in order of likelyness):

ECT sensor
MAP sensor
EGR valve
o2 sensor
IAT sensor
Crankshaft position sensor
Camshaft position sensor

If you go to the FAQ2 page, you can find a link to download the '95 FSM (it's a rapidshare link). It will have procedures for testing the various sensors to make sure they are sending out the signals they should be.

Lots of possibilities. Do you have a check engine light? Did you check to see what code you get if you do have the light?

First thing that comes to my mind is that it may be a bad fuel pump.

No check engine light. I guess i didnt think about the fuel pump but i'll put a gauge on it. I'll read through faq2. i searched the other 2 threads that had similar problems also...hopefully we can get this gremlin pin pointed.

I'd throw a coil into the mix also, sometimes they screw up once they get hot.

I took the coil off of my 96 ram and put it in the Dakota and it still did the exact same thing, ran good till it got warm then missed and back fires up a storm.

Even if it hasn't thrown a light check for codes I have run into this on multiple obd1 chryslers. I would check ECT, Map, and hook a scan tool up and look for anything that is out of the oridinary like eratic voltages. It sounds to me once it hits closed loop it is advancing the timing to much.

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I wrote my post... something is up with the closed loop, and to add one more thing, if all the sensors check out, it may be the computer is bad. Also, if you don't have a scan tool that can be a read out for all the sensors, you can use a multimeter. Like I said before, the procedure for checking them with a multimeter is in the FSM.
