You have a 46re. You can get one out of a similar year ram or dakota. It will be a 96 and up.

It should be the auto transmission behind every 5.2 or 5.9 in a dodge truck from 1996 on. Keep in mind you need a 4x4 transmission... one out of a 2wd won't work. They switched to the 45rfe when the 4.7 came out.

Which I think he has up to or maybe through 2000. Also used the 46re in Durangos right?

I found a 46re in a 99 Durango this morning. The guy said something about some sort of plug being diffrent with these than the ones in the Dakota but that most people were able to easily able to adapt it. I guess I need to get the old tranny out and get a good look at it first.

I am going to get an old local mechanic to do the swap for me. He can rebuild trannies but he does not do them regularly so I want to so to speak figure out the problem in advance.

Anyone have any experience with this "plug adaptation"?

Nothing that I know of. Unless one of the electrical plugs is slightly different.

Yeah, I can't think of anythign that would be different between the two. If it is anything I am guessing it is minor.

The only difference I know of is the durangos have their speed sensor integrated with the ABS sensor in the rear axle, so there wouldn't be a speed sensor in the transmission. But that would only be for a 2wd, cause our 4x4s have the speed sensor in the transfer case. So if you use your transfer case, then there shouldn't be any differences.
