It depends on where it is leaking from! Do you a picture? If its coming from the input shaft or one of the two output shafts, it just needs a seal. If it's coming from the detent plug or shifter lever, it just needs an o-ring. If it's coming from between the case halves, it needs to be taken apart and rtv'ed.

You can do this in the truck if you want, but these pics are from a write up I did a while ago when I did the 231 to 242 t case swap (I had to go all the way through both transfer cases to swap the input shafts). Be sure to drain the fluid out before starting this!!

1) Remove the tail shaft housing. There are 3 bolts holding it on, and then hit it with a rubber mallet until it breaks loose.

2) Next, to get the rear bearing retainer off, remove the retaining clip and speed sensor. (You will need retaining ring pliers for the clip... save yourself a lot of trouble and get some instead of trying to make due with something else.) Then remove the 4 bolts and beat it with a rubber mallet until it slides off.

3) Next, remove the rear cover. There are 3 bolts that are different than the rest. VERY IMPORTANT...MARK WHERE THEY GO!!! The two bolts with the washers are for the guide pins, and right around those there are slots to slide a pry bar under to pry the cover off once unbolted... so there is no need to beat it with a rubber mallet. Be sure to pay attention to the oil pump and be sure the tube is still in place on reassebly!

Once unbolted slide the rear cover off. Now clean everything thoroughly and reassemble using black rtv gasket maker.

does the RTV have to be black or just high-temp?

Go to the dealership and they have RTV that is "special" for use with transmission fluid (which is what your supposed to put in the transfer case). That Mopar RTV is black in color.
