V8 Swap to Dakota?
Ok, I went out to the junkyard today and found a 99 durango with a 318 in it with the tranny. The only thing is I can't use my harness because the 99 uses a different type of computer and plug and I can't just plug it in so I will have to try and figure out how to wire my dash up in it. Also the transmission is electronic so I would have to use the durango harness. My question is would that work? I couldn't find a 360 anywhere so it looks like i'm going with a 318. But would the Durango motor and tranny swap with no problem? The durango tranny also uses an electronic speedo, so I couldn't use my cable driven one. What other problems might I encounter with this motor, tranny swap?
To be honest, thats asking for a headache! You could look for a '94-'96 gauge cluster since they use an electronic speedometer, but wiring it in could be a problem.
The engine and transmission will both fit, but the fact that you would have to use the OBDII computer for the transmission is asking for a wiring issue!

ok, what if i pull the motor out of the durango and use an earlier hydraulic tranny? i found that combo in the yard. what about the computer? can i use anyone as long as its obd1 and for a v8?
I believe only '92 and '93 computers are interchangeable and '94 and '95 computers are interchangeable.
Alright. I got my motor and transmission. Pulled a 318 out of a '94 dakota. I also got the wire harness. BUT i'm still a little stumped on which computer I need to order because I can't find one in the yards anywhere. Mine's a '93, got a '94 motor and harness. Do I need a '94 computer or a '93 with my v6 harness with the 2 injector wires? I don't know if they changed the pinouts between the 93 and 94. If not then I can get a 94 and use it with the new harness I got.
You can't use a '94 computer or wiring harness on your '93. The pinouts are different and it will cause you a lot of problems. You need a '92 or '93 computer and harness. You can keep your v6 harness and wire in the extra 2 injectors and it will work fine, just be sure to wire them in with some quality work! Actually solder all joints and use heat-shrink wrap over any bare wire.
