3.90 gears
$535 for both axles is not a bad price at all. Keep in mind that you are going to have to buy 2 axles from the junkyard, and you have no idea what condition the seals and gears are.
And no gen 1 ever came with a 30 inch tire... the gen 2s did.

the factory size tire on mine was 235x75x15 goodyear wrangler. when i bought mine it had the original spare on it that had never been used, i also had factory 3.9 gears.
mine was an 89 sport but did not have a tow package, thats not to say the ones with the tow do not have them, but i'm pretty sure all the sport 4x4's did. a good sign at a junkyard is to look for one with a short box and a factory roll bar on it, it' probably a sport.

Sport models only came with painted bumpers and the grill. It has the same chances as anyother model to have the 3.9's. I only said look for the towing package, because it is the best for towing. But not all towing packages have them. Mine didn't.
yes if you look for an auto tranny cooler on the front you increase you chances it's got 3.90. just trying to narrow things down because the tags on the diff tells you pretty well nothing. but if you find an 89-91 with a factory roll bar theres a good chance it's got 3.9's. the sports back then had different options then the 92-96. pretty sure the convertibles had 3.9's too.
anyone know what the 90-91 shelby daks had i would like to know. that was dodges experiment with a 318 in a dak before they mass produced them in 92.

You got your facts wrong there on the Shelby, Mazda. They produced them for only 1 year in '89 and the mass production v8s were available in '91 with the LA 318.

Does that answer your question?
A four-speed automatic linked to a 3.91-geared Sure-Grip differential rounded out the drivetrain.
Does that answer your question?

thanks slt. are you sure about the 91's having a 318. always thought the 318 was not put into the dak until 92. the 88-91 are throttle body injected, but the 92 to 96 are multiport. never heard of a 91 throttle body injected 318 in a dak (except the Shelby) and i never heard of a multiport injection a 91. if someone has one let me know.
should add that you could get a 318 throttle body from a full size dodge in the late 80's but it was not available for daks.

Yes, I'm positive the '91 came available with the LA 318. The fuel injected LA engines were throttle body injected. '92 started the multi-port injected magnums.
If you look at the '91 body, its the new body style. They did a make over of the body in '91 to make the hood longer to be able to fit the 318. Remember the Shelby dakota had electric pusher fans for the radiator to fit the 318 since the hood was shorter.
Maybe thats cause '91 is not the late 80s?

sorry 318 but 87-91 body panels can be replaced by the 92-96. that includes the hood and front fenders. there interchangeable. my 3.9 89 had an insert about 8 inches long on the fan just to reach the rad, it was way short. don't know what you read but from experience i could of dropped a 318 in my 89 and had room to spare at the front.
The big change for 1991 was a V8 engine, the 318, producing 165 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque for 1991, via a single fuel injector. The Club Cab was available with four wheel drive; the hood was extended to fit the V8 engine, and the front appearance was upgraded somewhat.
'nuff said.
