Unhappy Fuel Problems with 93 318.. help!

I have a 93 dakota 318 with a 4x4 that has given me no problems for the last two years. It has 165k miles on it and last week it started acting funny on me. It started sputtering on me at times and then last week it died like it was out of gas. I have had ignition wire problems in the past so i made sure it was snapped in and tried starting it. NOthing. My friends started saying i was out of gas because my gauge is broken, I knew i wasnt because i set my odomoter every time i fill up, and because i have an indicator light. BUt out of frustration I kicked my fuel tank and it started up. It has sputtered a couple times since then but hasnt died on me. I went ahead and replaced my plugs and wires because I already had them, but as i assumed that didnt fix it. Yesterday, I started noticing when I put the pedal down hard it seemed like no gas was getting to it. I took it out today and if i gradually put gas it seems to run ok, but if i need to speed up quickly, it bogs down real bad. I really need it to get to work/school. My question is what could it be. I assume it could be a fuel filter or pump. Any help would be appreciated.

Your fuel pump is taking a dump on you. You said you kicked the tank? When you kicked it, you caused the pump to turn over and start pumping. I would suggest you replace the pump. I had to kick the tank on my Jeep ZJ everytime I had to start it. Turn the key and kick, started right up.

Yes it sounds like the fuel pump. Just replace the fuel tank sending unit.

Thanks for the help? When you say replAce the sending unit, does that mean I dont need a whole new pump? I plan on dropping the tank saturday and getting it done.

The sending unit is the unit that drops into the tank. 1 piece. It has the fuel pump and filter and connected and fuel level and float. It costs around $200, depending where you go. The most reliable place is Napa.

I'm trying to work out a similar problem. Is there anything I can do to diagnose 100% before replacing? Will a fuel pressure test tell me anything if the problem is intermittent like micauthors?

Get a fuel pressure gauge and see what you got.
