column shift slipping Helps Please
Hey guys
My colums shift moves but the gears do not change!!
My truck is highly modified internally and would be a alot of work removing the steering column
If anyone has pics of the parts inside the steering column it would help
Also deails on removing the steering column.
Looks like a rubber grommet has slipped downon the engine bay side. i have pushed this in but may have pushed it too far up and made it worse!!
Any advice or help will be most appreciated.

Before you go tearing apart the steering column, have you checked the linkages under the truck to make sure the swivel lock bolt is still tight?

The shifter arm in the steering column is all contained within the column. Not serviceable. Just replace the column. But your problem may be within your cable setup. Since we don't know what or how you set it up. It is up to you to diagnose it.
I have diagnosed that the problem is on the column not the cable
A thick black grommet/ring slipped out i have added a pic to show your guys
I pushed it up and it fixed the problem before slipping out again.
I pushed it up with a thick wire and put a hose clamp to prevent it falling out again.
I must have pushed it too far as now i can not feel it and the shifting problem is bad
The gear selector moves up and down in the cab but not in the engine bay.
If i undo the plug from the gearbox than it moves fine.
ANOTHER MAIN PROBLEM I HAVE is i am located in Sydney Australia and this is the only 87 Dakota i know off here in the country so i cant just go down the road and pick up a column.
Any help will be most appreciated

Wow, I'm not used to seeing the steering column on that side of the truck!!
I just looked and the '95 FSM has a teardown of the steering column. Unfortunately, they are different, but maybe not by much. You should download the FSM and read that section.

The 1995 Dakota Factory Service Manual (FSM) is available for free download on the faq page. It has the teardown and diagnostic procedures for everything on these trucks. Obviously, the '95 is different than your truck, but it will hopefully give you an idea on how to approach taking apart the steering column.
And I remember your truck now! That thing is sick! Its been a while since you've posted a picture of it. Can you post a picture of the inside again?
