It came stock in 88-98 some where up there. But they will not work for jeeps. Dodges came with a NP231D, D is for Dodge. Jeeps came with NP231J, J is for Jeep. Same for Chevy.

Crazy is right, the 231d will not work in a jeep without some custom work done. It will bolt up right, but the input shaft may need to be changed out and the rear output shaft is smaller (even if the spline count is the same). When I put the 242j in my truck I had to use a jeep slip yoke and get it adapted to my driveshaft with a "crossover" u joint. Also, the jeep shift pattern is different, so you may need a custom shift plate made.

I am told I can do a 231 swap but I have to use the front half with my 249 back half. I once tried to do a 242 swap but broke the chain inside cause it was set for the 3.73 rears and I have 3.55. Now that I know about the half swaps. I've been looking for another one. Or find one that is geared for 3.55 rears.

Um... what??

The transfer case has absolutely nothing to with what axle gears you have!! As long as the front axle matches the rear axle, it doesn't matter the ratio.

As for the case halves, you need to do research on how transfer cases are put together, because that won't work.

Im told the front chunk is different on a D30 3.55 then on a D30 3.73 chunk and the ratio in the tcase are off. so using the back half with the front half of a 242 will correct the bind.

I'll say it again, the transfer case does not make up for any gear ratio differences. It is a 1:1 front output to rear output... the front driveshaft will spin one time for every one time the rear driveshaft spins.

If you are in 4hi, the front AND rear driveshafts spin 1 time per every 1 turn of the input shaft. If you are in 4lo, the front AND rear driveshafts spin 1 time for every 2.72 turns of the input shaft.

Seriously, if you don't want to take my word for it, call up a drivetrain shop and ask if you can get a transfer case geared for 3.55s... see how long it takes them to quit laughing.
