Default throttle body swap/ cheap mods

I have a 93 2wd 5spd 3.9L and just found this awesome site. I came across a post on the second gen forum about swapping the 3.9 throttle body with a 5.2 t/b I was wondering if that would also work on the first gen trucks. what is the advantage of this mod mileage, power? also are there any other cheap mods for this truck. Ive had it for 2 years and only have $600 in it and would like to keep costs down.

Welcome to DodgeForum!

Yes, that works with our generation too. The v8 throttle body is bigger, so you get more intake airflow which means more power and if you can keep your foot out of it, possibly better milage, but you're probably more likely to see power gains than milage gains.

Another good modification is an electric fan. The mechanical fan is heavy and robs a good amount of power when its running.

Check faq2 for many more ideas.

'93 is multiport injection, not throttle body injection.

Is this just a straight swap or is there more to it?

Can this be done with a non magnum v6? mine is an 88

A bigger TB. There are several options out there. The whole point of using a v8 TB on a v6 is for a cheap option for a bigger TB.

Its a very simple, straight forward swap with the magnums. I don't know much about the LA's, just that you would have to deal with the injectors. But I don't know the size difference in the LA v6 and LA v8 TB.

I've done that swap on my old LA3.9 with a LA5.2 throttle body and the original TB mount has to be modified to fit the bigger one. Using the 5.2 mount results in an air leak due to the larger ports. I took a dremel and ground my 3.9 mount at an angle to the larger port size.

I just posted this on another thread but; The intake manifold is 47.5 mm and the stock TB is 46mm. So, jumping to the V8 TB (5.2 and 5.9) 50mm would give you more flow, however, you will still have that 2.5mm of restriction.. so you should HOG that manifold out to match.. If you were ever to go back down the free space wouldn't interfere with anything.
