Exclamation 1991 dakota with a 318 tranny problems

I have a 1991 dakota 4x4 with a A-500 tranny in it and when i put it in reverse it hesitates to go in til you give it a little gas and it then goes in hard. Also when you put it in drive it goes fine from first to second but acts like there is no other gear to go into. can this be fixed by tightening up the bands and if so how do i do it? I have always had chevy's and can work on them but i am lost when it comes to new dodges. All help would be very appreciated.

I will move this to the 1st Generation Dakota sub-section. In that section there is a transmission diagnostic chart located in the FAQ.
