I had that same problem and I took that little spring in there off so it spring powered any more and now mine stays in until im ready to use it. As far as the headliner I dont know about. I recovered mine with Realtree Hardwoods camo but I dont know where (besides junk yard) you can get the whole thing.

if the plastic tabs are intact on the sides, take out the sliding part of the cupholder and wrap all those tabs with electrical tape until the tray has a snug fit. I had the same problem and my wife complained about it hitting her knees so now that i did that it stays in but is still easy enough to pull out with one hand...If you still dont understand i can get some pics for ya...
Oh yeah, those little tabs pop out of the dash piece...be careful, as it's real easy to break the tabs. Pop out the front and slide it back. Wrap them with 4-5 wraps electrical tape and reinstall. Slide your cupholder tray back in and test for fit. If it's still pretty loose then wrap a little more on it put don't put too much or the tray won't slide...You may have to press the tabs in slightly with your finger to get the edge of the tray past the tape...
Tab still in...
Tab out...
Tab alone with tape wrap...
