Default 1996 4x4 problems?

Hey guys ,new to forum, I have a 1996 ,5.2 ,4x4 club cab dakota, 111251 miles,
1. problem #1, when coming to a stop or in first gear= automatic tranny, I hear a gear spinning in the transfer case up front, only does the spinning sound in first gear 2wd mode,no spinning sound when in 4 wheel drive mode?Sounds almost like a a pto turnong when being diengaged or
possibly a cv joint???Will make same sound in neutral coming to a stop also.

2. is there an indicator light for 4 wheel drive = engaged?

3. my dome lights work only when turning dash light **** on , lights do not come on when doors are opened.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

The spinning my be the drive shaft. Or brakes.

Yes there is a indicator light on the lower end of the 4wd shifter panel. The bulb may be dead. Or the switch on the transfer case may be bad.

The doors have switches, those may be bad. They are $3-4 at Autozone. Very simple to replace.

Here is mine. I made a 4x4 logo instead of the stock 4WD logo.

Wondering ifthe dome lights not coming on when either door is opened could be fuse related? The dome lights work with the panel light **** on dash? or could both door push button units be bad?

The light has a constant power feed. The ground is provided by the switch to the circut. So you may have a wire problem the door switch wire has a short or a cut in it.

Yeah, the transfer case disconnects the front input shaft, but the front wheels still turn the axles, differential and driveshaft since there is no form of axle disconnect on the '96 Dakota.
