Default my transmission burnt up today what to do?

Well today after work on my way home my transmission went out. I made it home (barely) but now it won't pull my truck. Anyways as some of you might know I'm planning on swapping a 360 in my dakota when I save up the $$$ in a few months. So it would be a waste of money to rebuild my transmission or but another 3.9 tranny. Anyways I was wondering if a tranny from a 360 would bolt up to my motor and pull it till I put the 360 in it? My trucks a 96 dakota 2wd with a 3.9l v6.

Yes, the 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9 all have the same transmission bellhousing bolt pattern. So you may as well do yourself a favor and get the v8 transmission.

Ok thanks. I figured it would work as I knew the 3.9 tranny would bolt up to a 5.9 but I thought I'd ask to make sure. Ill be going to the junkyard and finding one soon.

The gearing will be different. I'd almost do a 5-speed swap. No more tranny problems after that.

The gearing would be almost unnoticeable. The o/d units on both are identical. The trans behind the 3.9 is the 42/44rh-re. Ive never matched up the bellhousings but if what you say is true then if you use the v8 46rh-re trans make sure you use the correct converter. the v6 converter will not fit in the v8 trans. There are many different v8 converters. 90". non 90", offset, wide ring gear, narrow ring gear, etc.

The internals for the front half of these two transmissions are completely different, but the overdrive units are pretty much identical, the valve bodies are as well. The 46rh-re is also a bigger transmission.

If built right then you wont have any more problems out of the automatic.

Yea I know a guy who has worked on transmissions all his life. He is gonna find me a 46re and rebuild it for just the price of parts and the core charge. But because he runs his own shop he can get trannies dirt cheap compared to junkyards.
