Default question on towing

i have a 95 dak v6 3.9 magnum standard cab, no 4x4, my question is can i pull a motorcycle trailer with two bikes loaded on it. both bikes together weight about 1000 lbs. i want to trailer two bikes from philadelphia pa, to myrtle beach south carolina, my truck has 100,000 miles on her, well babied miles, i only used mobil 1 sythetic oil in her, i can rely on this truck everyday it is truly a work horse it never let me down, but can this haul be a test or will the tranny and motor completly crap out on me half way down there?

thanks

The truck will do fine pulling the weight. In fact, being in a trailer would be easier on the truck than putting 1000 lbs in the bed and going that distance. Mine is reaching 130,000 miles and I pulled a 5500 lb trailer with it... not very far though, but it wasn't interstate driving either! Once the weight is moving, there isn't near as much strain on the truck.

As for the transmission or something else possibly failing, thats impossible to predict. You should probably install an auxillary transmission cooler before you go.

Your tranny may be the weak link, if it's an auto...as said, an aux tranny cooler is a good idea, but then again you won't be hauling much. If it's up and down hilly driving, kick the OD off and you should be good. On the big flatlands where I live, I can get away with towing small loads in OD.

i tow my 6x12box trailer at about 2000 pounds a couple hundred miles weekly without problems. if the tranny keeps changing gears shut the od off. i dont trust the origional bumper on my 89 for towing, i would upgrade the hitch with a frame mounted one. if you havent changed the fluids, its probably a good time to with the tranny

The Over Drive is on all the time, everyday. Usually around 40MPH it will engage.

The Over Drive switch OD is to TRUN OFF the Over Drive. This will keep you from burning up Over Drive while towing heavy loads.

I've pulled 3500 in my trailer and about 400 in the bed at one time. And once I reached 65mph the truck just kept getting it. Now once I hit the west coast mountain grades its still did pretty good in my book. Although the truck lost some HP once I got above 5500 ft in altitude.

But you shouldn't even feel the weight of your bikes. Enjoy your trip.

I've towed several cars several hundred miles, usually with overdrive on unless its hilly. Heaviest loads were a Blazer on a full trailer, Sienna, Venture, and a Grand Cherokee all on a tow dolly (at separate times of course). Never had any problems towing, just be smart about it, sacrifice speed when going up a hill and keep your distances so you don't have to slam on brakes.
