Default 89 manual rack and pinion

I've mentioned in a previous post how I would like to change to power steering in my 89 Dakota (has manual now), but that will be a future thing. In the meantime, I'll have to use what I got. The rack I have may not be bad, but there seems to be too much play. If I twist the rack where the steering shaft hooks to it, the tie rods move pretty much immediately. But there seems to be play in the lower part of the shaft where the u joint is and where it hooks to rack. There is a little play in the upper u joint but not a lot. Is there any adjustment? Is this normal? Am I expecting too much from truck steering, to be like a car with rack and pinion? And lastly, if I go to junk yard, are all shafts the same 87 to 96, whether power or not, tilt or not? Do they even make a Hollanders interchange anymore? Thanks in advance, Scott.

LOL! For some reason (Unknown to me) a few people wanted to go from power steering to manual steering. I will never get that!

I say defiantly try to do the swap. My thoughts are the swap should be easy. But I have never seen the manual system. Check the FAQ in this section for the service manual and parts manual. I would say check out the pictures and see how close it all is.

If you have the old manual rack and pinion, i am highly interested in buying it. Even if it is wore out.
