Question Shopping a 92 = A little hard to shift into 4X

Hey guys, I'm looking at a 92 to buy with 123,000 V8 the drive train seems great. The body wellll eh ah.
How hard should it be to shift into the various stages of 4 wheel drive?? It seemed a little hard to get into some of the gears ect. Thanks in advance

I have the same truck, it used to in like a hot knife through butter, even low range. Spiders gears went, and it was cheaper for me to bolt a used rear in, this one is also easy, just not as easy as the original. By the way my motor has 236,000 miles and perrsss. Unfortunatly I had to replace the trans at 217,000.

did you try shifting while moving? it requires a little speed to mesh the transfer case properly.

Yes, I'm still learning about the "shift on the fly" but I went slow and then stopped a couple of times. Then I could get it in but one time it did grind a bit without going in. I put it in and out a couple of times in 4h, 4l, N, ect.
The truck mechanically looks good ect for this issue that bugs me.

Another thing, the trans seemed to shift really "firm" or hard. I didn't think much of it but my Gearhead son thought it was an issue?

If I remember right the 92 had syncros inside to help with the shifting. But if they are torn up it will be hard to shift. That may be your problem.

Unhappy Synch's

That's what I was afraid of. I haven't driven any of the 4wd yet and it just didn't seem right. I had to really fight it sometimes. Thanks guys, I think I'll pass and keep looking.
