Default Need info on Dakota engine swap!

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know with 100% certainty if I can take a 3.9liter V6 from a 1997 Dodge Dakota 4x4 automatic and put it in place of my current 3.9 Liter V6 that's in my 1995 Dodge Dakota 4x4 (with 3.9 V6)? I need to know if that engine will switch over since one of the piston rods broke back on Friday and I have a free engine I can have if it will work. The body for the other Dakota which is a 1997 is shot (all rusted out) and so are the breaks but everything on MY truck is fine except the engine of course, lol.

Hopefully you guys can tell me for sure, thanks!

Have you tried to cross reference the engine blocks? I can imagine you could providing you use everything off the original engine. Sensors, etc, etc...

They should work. I believe the sensors will be different so you might need to switch all of those, or some of those, over from your original motor.

The 3.9L engine is the same throughout the years, I don't think they even had a V6 pre-magnum engine offered. That being said you will be fine. And free is always good.

Yes you can. 100% positive. You will just have to use your electronics ect. Intake down from the 97 will work.

No need to switch the computers. Keep what you have and drop the new engine in, hook it up.

IF you do the swap, now is a good time to consider putting new gaskets on the engine you are putting in. Rear main seal and front main seals especially, oil pan gasket, timing cover gasket, all a PITA to change once you have the engine mounted.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't he need his old intake manifold and exhaust manifold? The 1997 won't have the EGR and his would.

But the long block will swap over.

Yes your wrong! Na JK. Your right I was thinking it was 98 with the new intake. But yes for a stock replacement use your stock intake and exhaust. The new one can work but you will have to delete the EGR.
