The only option at that point would be a divorced transfer case.
i just looked up the t56 on cl to see if any around... there is a vette one with bad syncros for 1200 obo or a viper one for 3650

Lol, I never said it was cheap! But it would be awesome. The .50 6th gear ratio would let you run 4:10s or 4:56s with near-factory size tires and still run at good rpms on the interstate. And with those low gears, the truck would haul in 1st-4th.
But back on topic... the nv4500 came on Ram 5.9 manuals... both 5.9s (the gas and diesel). You could use either, but you need the 5.9 magnum bellhousing. The case is tall and would require a 2 inch body lift to fit in the transmission tunnel.
But for a budget, the nv3500 should work. Like I said, since the Dakota is lighter than the Ram, it may hold up behind a 5.9L better in a Dakota than in a Ram.
