Default Cost to replace brake lines on '94 Dakota?

This one has 2x4 ABS brakes (6 cyl) and the lines are corroded badly. A Firestone employee said he has seen replacements as high as $850.

About what should it cost and where is the best place to do so? Thanks.

I doubt you can buy direct replacements. But your best shot is dealer, www.napaonline.com www.autozone.com Or spend some time on www.google.com looking for brake line replacements.

Your only choice may be custom built lines. It is not to hard to do it your self.

i'm with the do-it-yourself idea too! buy a flaring tool for 20 bucks and about 20 feet of bulk line, few fittings and your set. the tool should have instructions on how to make a double lap flare, if not get it off the net, it's easier than you think (might take a couple of tries though).
should be able to do it for under $100 counting the tool.

i 2nd making the lines urself, alot cheaper then oem and its not that hard, just pull off ur old lines, get a bender and flare kit, and copy originals, should be less then 50$

u cant really mess this up, just bleed after and check ur lines, then stop and go a couple times and check, no leaks and ur good

I also agree with the do it yourself method. I have not personally done it, however I assisted a friend in doing them on an oldsmobile and it was not a terrible process.

Make a write up if you feel so inclinded cuz it would be great info to have on the forum!

PICTUREZ!!!!! :-D

Whatever you do I wouldn't have a dealership replace the lines for you because it will cost way more then any other place unless you have a warranty on your car at that dealership. If you pay $850 to have the lines replaced they are ripping you off BIG TIME. My one mechanic would only charge around $300 for replacing my lines and that includes labor (on my 1995 dodge dakota 4x4 3.9 V6 Magnum). A good price for you should be about the same. I suggest calling around and getting quotes from different garages and get their per hour charge as well.

You guys sound encouraging. I'm used to doing dirty, greasy jobs even though I hate every minute of it.

I asked two local mechanics and they refused to give an estimate which means they probably don't want to do it anyhow.

Guess I'll get under the truck and take a look.

For that kind of money, you could drive to the southwest, visit a few junkyards, get all the parts you need and have a nice vacation as well. But if you choose Phoenix, wait til after summer is over. There are several in Phoenix that have 50 percent off days once or twice a week.

another option, search Craigslist for a complete dakota that has no rust issues. I paid $500 for my 89 with blown engine, and have seen several others in Phoenix, Las Vegas for under a grand. If you have to pay out that much money, get a whole parts truck....

I towed mine from Phoenix to Logan, Utah with tow bar. Minus the engine and trans, they aren't that heavy....

I discovered that the only lines that need replaced are the 2 along the frame so that will help keep the cost down, even though they are the worst part.

It is doubtful a good used set coud be found so I will get some more estimates. Thanks.

Some people like to work on cars, most people don't. For me... I love every second of it and want to learn as much as I can. As long as I have access to the right tools I'm always down to work on a car or truck.

as far as brake lines, I haven't done it myself, but I know if you have the cutting, bending and flaring tools it's pretty fun.
