46rh tranny
How much power can the 46rh handle stock and does anyone build them stronger? the most im wanting to put to the ground is probably gonna be around 300-350 hp range but that could change later down the road
Thanks.
Thanks.
The 46rh is actually a pretty good transmission and any transmission rebuilder should be able to build it stronger. It’s basically a 727 or TF8 transmission that has an overdrive section where the extension housing used to be to give you a 4th gear. The old 727 was one of the best automatics made. If they’re serviced regularly and not badly abused they’ll last a long time. The 46rh was used behind the gas V8's. The 47rh was used behind the Cummings turbo diesel and was a slightly beefed up version of the 46rh. I suspect a 46rh in good shape would hold up pretty well behind 300-350 hp, unless you’re really beating on it. If it needs to be rebuilt it can be upgraded with 47rh internal parts very easily and inexpensively.
Put in performance clutches and a shift kit, keep the fluid cool, and that transmission will last a long, long time behind a measly 350 hp. The TF 727 is a very popular drag racing transmission, so people have put more than double that power to one.
www.Phoenixtrans.com does HD versions. Great reviews. Here is a great article on how to build a HD 46re(IIRC) which is almost the same as the 46rh.
