Default NP231 problems

I have just had my 2nd blown tcase in a year and a half. How do I prevent the chain from slipping off and eating the housing? Is this an adjustment issue or a chain problem? Any ideas? Now too poor to just have it repaired.

Can you give some details on when you use 4x4 (NEVER use it on dry pavement) and how you shift through the t case selections, etc. The chains in these t cases are tough, so if you are using it properly, it should not break easily.

I do not use the 4 wheel very often, espc. since it is completely stock. 4h is usually all i ever need and i always shift into it off pavement. The chain did not break, but slipped off of the gear that drives the front shaft and ate a nice hole in the bottom of the tcase. I have put some photos of the damage in my gallery.

Here you can see where the loose chain ground the sides of the housing
