Default 87 Dakota 4cl, 5spd. What tranny???

Hi all. I'm new to the forum, graet site!

Now on to the business end.
I have an 87 Dakota.
What transmission is on my 87 2.2L 5spd manual 2wd Dakata? is it the same as the 6cyl(3.9L) 5 speeds?

Thanks ben

Welcome to DodgeForum!

You have the NV2500 or A535 (same transmission, different name). And it is the same for all engines.

Ok great. That tranny will bolt up to a 318 then?

Bolt up to... yes. Survive behind... no!!! A 318 will tear apart that transmission. If you're looking for a manual transmission to use behind a 318, you will want the nv3500.

The nv4500 requires a 2 inch body lift to fit in the transmission tunnel. I'll do a write up about that transmission in the next few weeks cause I'm about to put one in my truck.

Will the nv3500 bolt right in place of the nv2500? . Even the nv4500 isn't out of the question in my case. I'm pulling the 383/727 combo out of my 57 Dodge pick up. Its just a little to much for the old steering, brakes and suspension. (I'm gunna save it for my muscle car project)

Then I'm putting the 57 onto my 87 Dakota Chassis and powing it with a very mild 318 (nothing crazy, 3/4 cam, 4brrl, headers the usual bolt ons. maybe 225hp) I was hoping to use the 5spd tranny that I already have. then if it fails replace it. but if it isn't a simple replacement then I need to source a nv3500 or 4500 now.
