Default 95 v8 dakota trans question

hey there. Just bought a 95 v8 dakota from a buddy that built it for tough truck racing. Only downfall is that its a standard. I would like to put an automatic behind it but do not know which one comes in these trucks. Truck is a 4wheel drive. any help would greatly be appriciated

The automatic transmission that would have come in your truck is the 46rh (a518). Its basically a TF 727 with an overdrive unit in its tail.

The overdrive unit is electronically controlled, but 1-3 are hydraulically controlled.

If the TF727 is a 4x4 transmission and has the small block bellhousing, it should work.

came off a 360 so yeah. but he said the tailshafts is different and shorter. I will never use over drive on this truck. so i can get by with bolting it up and not deal with the wiring and computer?

The tailshaft should have a 6 hole pattern for putting a transfer case on the back of it, its not like a 2wd transmission where the driveshaft slips into the tailshaft. I don't see how different they could be, but I have no idea what your 727 looks like.

As far as length goes, its going to be a different length than your nv3500 anyway, so you'll need two new driveshafts regardless.

But if you leave the OD unhooked, it should work fine. I'm not going to say it will cause I'm not 100% sure, but it should work.

As far as transmissions go so long as you get one that is 95 or OLDER you will be fine. Anything 96 or newer will NOT shift out of 1st since they have an electronically controlled governor instead of Hydrualic.

If you feel up to it, find an ATSG book on the A518 (46RH/RE) and go to your local Advance Auto Parts store for a rebuild kit. IIRC walk-in price is a little over $150 and it is complete with everything you need including kickdown and low/reverse bands. It's a quality kit with Transtec seals and Alto tan clutches complete with steels. I use them for stock rebuilds and they'll hold about 350rwhp with a good shift kit on a fresh OE torque converter... At the bare minimum get a Trans-Go TFOD-Jr shift kit, otherwise the TFOD-HD2 is the full shift kit for the A518s.

eh, ill pick up a junkyard unit. next question, do they make any aftermarket floor mounted shifters? looked at b&m but they just have em for the older model 727's. I really dont wanna swap columns. will a 727 trans shifter work on it?
