alternator going out-upgrade time?
Okay so in an effort to determine why my truck wont start after sitting overnight (needing a jump), I measured alternator output and its only 30 amps at idle. As far as I know, its original and the truck has just over 200k miles on it so this isn't actually surprising, just annoying- my alternator is failing.
I might or might not have the money when it does finally go out for an upgrade, but I was thinking of buying a high output alternator? Such as Tuff Stuff Performance 7510D. Its 175 amps as opposed to stock 75, and only $265.95 + shipping from Summit, compared to $400+ for the Power Master high output alternators.
Would there be any negative effects from doing this upgrade? And has anyone ever heard of Tuff Stuff, can vouch for quality, reliability, that it will actual bolt up and plug in to my truck properly?
If I can't afford an upgrade I will just buy a new (not reman) 120 amp alternator off of eBay. My truck is a 92 Dakota 5.2 Magnum, auto. What years are compatible?

At idle Amps and voltage will be low out of all alternators. Most auto parts stores will test your alternator for free.
175amp is a extreme high amp alternator. Unless you need it for something EXTREME. Stock to even lightly modified truck doesn't need it.
Autozone sells the 120amp units with a lifetime warranty. I would recommend getting this one.
I got a 140 or 120 amp. I can't remember. I got 4 electric fans a 10,000lb winch and my alt can handle all of it.
The only negative side effect of a high amp is you won't be able to use all of the power until you upgrade the cables ect and battery.
