Default Transmission "Clink"

All right guys I am in need of your expertize. I have a 1994 Dakota 4X4, 318 w/ the auto transmission. It has 118,000 original miles. When I shift into reverse It "clinks". Not a slam just clink. Any ideas? Also, my gear selector when in drive is on the far right edge of the D. Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. Thanks in advance.

is there movement in the axle pinion? or in the output shaft at the transfer case? is there a slip joint in the driveshaft?
if you put the transfer case into neutral and shift trans into gear do you still hear the sound?

the position of the gear selector indicator on the dash display can be adjusted. check the factory service manuals in the sticky section for info.
