Default Steering Question

I have a lot of play in the steering, what would the causes be, that I could easily check myself. I know I need new tires but I don't think that's the cause of it. The truck pretty much sat for about a year before it was given to me.

Lots of possibilities. Just lift up the front end. Move the wheels back and forth up and down side to side all over. See what joints move.

i had this same problem in my truck and i lifted it and moved the tires back and forth and my problem was the pitman arm so make sure you watch it when you check yours

I heard you can adjust the steering box? The guy who I heard it from didn't know how or anything. Anyone done this before?
