Uh Oh
So I was driving my truck and all the sudden there was a bang... truck stalled.
Came to a stop popped it in neutral and started up went to 1st and wont go anywhere stalled right when the clutch started to grab. I am thinking transfer case/transmission. Drive shaft would not turn when it was going to get towed. Anyone know a way to tell what it was without pulling either the transfer case or tranny? I was thinking about just dumping the fluid and taking a peek looking for metal.
Or do you think it could be the rear/ front diff? I think a tire would lock up if that was it. Sucks I just put a new clutch in and might need to pull the tranny again.

If the truck is in neutral, I think the drive shaft should spin? Also I would agree that checking the fluid would give you a good idea of what went.
Im thinking you blew up your tranny. Ouch!

Even in neutral the drive shaft should not turn, unless the wheels are off of the ground.
If up the tires and spin the tires and drive shaft, engage it in gear spin the wheel by hand and hold in the clutch at the same time. See if there is any binding. It will be tighter to turn in gear.

I had that same exact thing happen to me with my 1995 dodge dakota, was doing about 60mph and heard this bang kinda like a rock hitting the underneath of my truck. Pulled over, put it in park, saw nothing laying on the ground, got back in tried driving it, wouldn't move, it just revved up. It turned out to be the rear end blew up, I replaced that one-wheel-peel with a limited slip rear.
Maybe you have the same problem.

Not that this information is of any use to anybody, but a similar thing happened in my friends Honda CRV when the rear dif blew. Thankfully that car is AWD, apparently her dad just disconnected the rear drive shaft and drove it home as FWD. 9 months later, she still hasn't gotten around to fixing it properly, but no noted problems in day-to-day driving.
I have heard of guys on the trail doing the same thing in 4wd trucks, altho I can't imagine that it can be very good at all for that kind of system. I suppose if you absolutely desperately need to get home...
