Default CPS ring neccessity?

I am swapping a 5.9l (Roller) into a 1st gen and was wondering (while accepting the impending ridicule), since I am using a carb setup, do I need the ring for the crank position sensor? Is it weighted as well as the flexplate for the 5.9l? I think it is not neccessary, but am just confirming.

It depends on what your setup. How is the ignition controlled?

Carb, MSD 6, vac distributor. I just do not want to put the ring back on if I do not have to. I assume the balance is maintained by the flexplate/converter, but just double checking.

Please understand that I am a beginner when it comes to automatics, so after pulling a torque converter from a truck today, I discovered I do need the flexplate. I wasn't sure that it was the flexplate that I was discussing. Thanks for the help regardless.
