The axle usually has some form of ID tag on it. However often times with our older trucks the tag is since long gone. You can do what myself and several other members have done and request a build sheet from dodge for your truck. The link to do this is located in the FAQ1. It is a very interesting bit of information to get and will answer a lot of questions like gear ratios, gas tank size, etc etc.
As far as things to check, the easiest answer is "everything" lol. Being that it is new to you I'd recommend planning to do plugs, wires, oil, PCV valve, air filter, just to name a few. These are a few things that aren't terribly expensive and can really help. One of the first things I checked with mine was windshield wipers, an important part that is easily over looked until you NEED them. lol
Good luck, keep us informed and just in case it hasn't happened: Welcome to the forum!

The sticker under the hood lists the ratio.
Replace the bypass hose while your that far. It would be a pain in the butt to replace it when it fails. It is on top of the water pump. Chang the thermostat. Check and replace any hoses that are soft. Flush out he radiator.

x2 on that. I bought the truck off a guy that had the rad and hoses done. They didn't change the upper return/bypass rad hose and it went. So I had to change it. Wasn't too hard just time consuming.
chop that muffler outta there lol us iowa boys run straight pipes no cats and no emmissions tests lol hey welcome to the forum another red truck ! we outta start a club......
