Default cv joint boots

Think Im whipping the proverbial dead horse here. Investigation on split cv joint boots has lead me to the point that this repair is temporary at best. From pricing and what I learned on the internet it probably is best to just replace the cv axil and start over. Has anyone used this fix? My attention right now, snow 94 dak plow fit.

Skip the split boot and just buy the regular one. You'll have to pull the axle either way hardest part is crimping the new clamp on I used a pair of dull wire cutters.

IMO the boot replacement is a good choice if the joint isn't making any noise, I did one of mine 2 years ago and it's still fine.

There's some info I posted on plows towards the end of this thread.

Ya just use a full new boot. I just did this 2 days ago. Less then a hour for a complete R&R.

if you are going to replace just the boot make sure you clean the inside of the axle real good and get the right grease for it. cv joints use a special low temperature grease thats really thin. o and never use the split boots, they dont work

Thanks guys, boot replacement changed to axil replacement. Some dufas in the past had hammered the thing and the head above the locknut was distorted. Got my trusty thread restore kit and cleaned it up a bit to get it out. All was well till I decided to check the inner joint. Moving it around and checking for thrust it felt like I was stirring a baseball bat in a bucket of mush and thrust was about three inches so I tripped back to trusty old A.Zone and replaced it. Now all I gotta do is replace that bad Muffler bearing. lol ( well at least the wife believes that one)

One note for anyone who does it. Do both the inner and outer at the same time. Even if only one side is bad. You don't want to take it appart again when the other one fails. Chances are the other one is just as old and will fail soon.

Are you actually taking the CV joint apart?
