Hi I have a 96 dakota 4x4 3.9 with 44re tranny that died I pulled the tranny already and just need another one but was told that only a 96 will work because of some of the electronics being changed. I found a good low milage 44re from a 98 and it looks exactly the same except a slightly deeper pan and the one 3pin sensor is different (they are both 3 pin just different) can I just change the sensor? and what or how can I make this work it must be possible.

 

The info we have is that 3.9 has the 42re. The 97-up 5.2 V8's have the 44re. The 44re will work but as far as the plugs/electronics, You may be able to swap it.

 

Yes my mistake I was somehow thinking 44 but I do have a 42RE and the 98 is a 42RE can this work
