Default NP231 transfer case question

I have a 1995 Dakota with the 3.9L 5 speed, 4x4 with the np231 transfer case in it. It has some MASSIVE chain slop in it, and it sounds like its about to blow up.

I found another np231 transfer case from a 1994 Jeep wrangler 4.0L.

WILL THE JEEP np231 transfer case work?

No it will not. Yours is a NP231D D is for Dodge. The Jeep will have a J at the end. It is not the same transfercase.

you can use the jeep transfercase but will need to swap the input shafts...

The J t-fer cases are punk-a$$ junk...not worth it to swap the input shafts. Hit the bone yards for a rebuildable replacement or rebuild your own...unless it has a big exit wound.

It works fine cause it's in your Jeep...and at 52 years I've forgotten more rocks than your Jeep will ever see. Use the NP231-D in a dodge and you won't be disappointed. For the time/effort spent sourcing and swapping shafts, you can rebuild your Dodge t-case.

unless you already inspected it, chances are it already has a hole in it from the chain rotating. my cousin bought a durango with a bad transfer case and drove it for 3yrs with a huge hole in it before he took it in...needless to say, he'll never ignore us again when it come to sounds from his car..lol
