NV231 Transfer Case
I read the tech forums and all that. Got the transfer case number. Looked around and found a couple different ones for a jeep. Now looking again and finding some out of newer Durangos and Dakotas. Like 2000 Model year. Im guessing that a transfer case is a transfer case, but they are saying of an AT and I have an MT. Would that make a difference in how they mate up or are the trans the same at the business end?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
Oh the story, my current t-case has a hole in the side of the case, and the gears seem grenaded...so yeah. Need to find a t-case get my truck on the lift and see what I can do.

Just looked again and found a transfer case deal in the 2nd Gen forum stating the transfer case is the NP231D for my 1996. It also states that they had an NP231 in the 00 Dakotas and Durangos... So maybe the lack of replies and my futher reading in to things I havent read everything about yet... May have led me to answer my own question?
So I can pull the trigger on the NP231 out of a 00 Durango?
I am just looking for a second opinion I guess, I dont want to buy it and it be wrong because I read something wrong. Thanks again, sorry for not reading everything.

Just as well as I could change the input, could I just the same change the output?
After reading the t-case descriptions more over on drivetrain.com the 2000 t-case doesnt have a speedo hole which I guess mine in a 1996 has.
So if I read that right it could possibly work I just wouldnt have a speedo?
Why are t-cases so dang expensive...

The output is part of the main shaft, so the entire main shaft would have to be switched out if you wanted to change the output. I'm not sure if the main shafts are swappable between the np231d and the np231j. But I can tell you that if you get the 2000 case, you can change out the main shafts between the np231ds so you keep your main shaft with the speed sensor splines and you can use your extension housing that has the speed sensor hole if its not that part of the case thats destroyed. The transfer case case is in 4 peices... the front and rear halves, the extension housing, and the tail cone.
Ok so drivetrain.com says that they both are 23 spline inputs. But the 96 Dakota is a 27 output I believe, and the 00 Durango is a 32 spline.
Im in the diesel program for school and was talking to my teacher today, and he said that since I had been driving it with the hole in the case that I probably shouldnt use anything from my t-case.
So if I left the 2000 Durango t-case the same set-up, could I change that rear cone with the speedo hole and have the speedo work? And then be able to maybe pull some sort of part off of a Durango for the rear output that maybe work with my driveshaft then? or would I have to change something on my driveshaft then too? This would be if my main shaft is not salvageable because of the road grime or whatever made it grenade in the first place.
I am only asking these questions because I dont want to buy a t-case from a big used parts place because they want like 500-800 and thats basically what I paid for the truck...plus saving money is never bad...

correct me if im wrong..but im kind of asking too lol but do the 2000s have the floor shifter compared to the dash switch? or does it not matter?

If it is a np231, it has a floor shifter. The electric shift is a different transfer case, I think the np233.

But if the splines are there, and the extension housing fits, then you can use the yoke that fits the 32 spline shaft on your driveshaft, you'll probably just need a new u-joint.
