Default Weak fuel pump?

Ok quick question on my 93 5.2 dakota, When i shut the truck off it loses fuel pressure instantley. I recently put on a brand new fuel pressure regulator and when i go to start it i have to cycle the key 3 times in order to get it to fire and it still chugs alittle. Driving it down the road i noticed when i hit a incline it seems alittle sluggish too. Could this be a good sign that my fuel pump is on its way out? My gas millage is also horrible 9.50-10mpg! as i posted before i thought it could be my true duals with no cross over pipe, but now im thinking its a fuel issue? Please help! this truck is driving me crazy and i have stuck alot of money into it trying to figure it out. Oh yeah the fuel pressure is 29psi at idle with a snap on fp gauge.

I think mine has some sort of fuel or oil pump issue as well. I went to start my truck yesterday and it seemed like it wanted to shut off... The RPMs would just keep getting lower and when I hit the gas it took a while for it to even respond.. So I shut the truck off then started it back up 2 seconds later and the problem what gone? It does it once in a blue moon, but never while idling; it usually happens when I and in first or second gear and start to move.. It will kinda jump around a little bit, like it wants to go, then it doesn't, then it does then it doesnt...

29psi sounds low. I think it needs to be 35psi. But not 100%. Also it may be the volume output of the pump. Bad pumps may have good pressure but bad volume output. It may be best just to replace it.

Unless the pump goes suddenly, wait until the tank is empty or very close to empty cause you gotta either drop the tank or remove the bed. The choice is yours. I have had to replace four fuel pumps in my life. Three of them were in the tanks and each failed right after I filled the friggin tank. And I mean literally, I filled the tank drove the mile home and it would not start again. One died right in the gas station. I had to get it towed home. Good Times

i agree that 29 sounds low. what is it runing down the highway. does it drop under wot?
the instant drop off of fuel pressure is eighter and injector leaking down a pump leaking down (common) or a fuel leak. you should beable to go off and eat lunch and come back to ten to fifteen psi normally. that's your starting issue i'd say because it has to reprime the lines.

im not shure what pressure it's at when going down the road or at wide open throttle, guess i should have checked. I did pick up a pump assembly yesterday a "carter" and i am going to install it tommarrow, just trying to get some of this gas out of the tank first. I hope it isn't the injectors, by the way its acting i got a feeling it's the pump, well hope fully i'm right. I just put on a brand new fuel pressure regulator because the other one was leaking. But yes when you park it and shut it off it lose's pressure instantly and you have to cycle the key to get it to fire again. sometimes even after you cycle it 3 times it will fire and starat but act like it still isn't getting enough gas, chugs alittle. I will keep you guys posted after i get the pump installed tommarrow and let you know how it goes. Thanks again for all your help!

Ok here's the update on my problems i was having. i installed my new fuel pump assembley today because my other fuel pump only had 29psi at idle and also the fuel would bleed of right away when you would shut the truck off. well with my new pump assembly i now have around that 38 psi at idle! but that didn't solve my fuel bleed of problem so i checked my fpr and the small "o" ring wasn't seated all the way in the rail causing it to bleed back. And also my drivers side rear brake was dragging really bad, it was really hard to turn it by had so i backed that off quite abit too. Now the truck drives like a dream down the road! no more chugging and i got my acceleration back, now i just hope this made a difference with my 9.50-10mpg fuel millage i was getting.
