518 Trans Pan

no,the pans are a standard size, all the newer trannies have the deeper pans, than they did in like say the 70's and 80's.and,most likely the 2 wheel drive does not have the a518.i say that, because, my 3) 2whell drive 3.9 trucks, have the smaller tranny a500 ,my now just built 4x4 v8 truck, has the 518.now,whether they are different, because of 2 wheel drive compared to 4x4,or v6 compared to v8 i dont know.but here is how you can tell which one you have.on the a500,if you look at the bottom of the pan the a500,is square looking, the a518,has like a heel coming off the front left corner.but the answer to your question,no it will not be deeper.

Crazy is right, the pans are the same. 4X4 or 2wd pans are all the same for all years of the 518, 46\47RE. The pan depth does change in 1998 but that was due to a change in the design of the filter, which required the pan to be deeper. 1998 and up for both the 4X4 and 2WD, had the same pans and filters, as was the case from 1997 and down, although they had the shallower pan and filter. The early filter is all filter material (and it’s the same filter 727”s had from the late 60”s up) and the later filter is a filter material encased in plastic, which made it thicker, requiring the deeper pan.

Stock V6's came with 42rh (A500), Stock V8's came with 46rh (A518). Do to the V8 needing more strength. Externally I don't know how to tell them apart except the part numbers.
