Default Speedometer not working, bad gas milage 95 2.5 liter

Hello all,

hoping someone could help me with my speedometer. It started cutting out and jumping around about 2 weeks ago, also occasionally it would jump without moving like sitting at a stop sign. It finally gave out and doesn't work at all now. Just wondering if there are some simple things I could check first? Also my gas milage went to crap the begining of winter, I'd say around 16/19 and I was getting 20/25 before that. I took it to a mechanic and they said the o2 sensor is working and that it doesn't appear to have any problems, in fact he told me the truck runs great. One last thing....when you shut the hood to the truck it will stutter and try to stall out, we found that it was the computer that was causing it...basically just tap it down where the hose comes out the bottom. Could all these problems be related? Like I said, the truck runs great and other than the speedometer and gas milage, haven't had any problems

it's a 95 dakota 2.5liter, manual tranny, 113k miles

thanks for any suggestions

With the computer problem, sounds like a bad wire or terminal to the computer.
The O2 may be at fault as well as the other sensors. Not everything is working or not working, the O2 may be working but maybe it is not working efficiently just like you engine it is running but not efficiently.

as far as the O2 sensor, would you recommend having it replaced? I can't imagine it would cost too much to start there.

Would you have a speed sensor on a manual?

Most are mounted near the transmission output shaft,

Ok, went to pick up a speed sensor at my local parts store and he said there was a speed sensor and a speed output sensor. The output sensor basically looks like a big spark plug with threading to screw into somewhere? I can't figure out where it goes. I climbed under the truck and found the speed sensor on the tranny but have no idea where this output sensor goes. been trying to find some pics online but no luck yet. The parts guy told me to start with the output sensor since it was only 16.00 bucks and easy to install. If that doesn't do it than it's on the the speed sensor.

Anyone know where the "output sensor" is located?

Thanks again for the help, I am deffinetly not a mechanic but have been trying to do some of this stuff on my own to learn.

Found out there is no output sensor on my truck (think it's for a auto tranny) I replaced the speed sensor and no luck with the speedo. My guess is that it is a electrical problem. I pulled off the computer and followed the wires into their port, they are all in tight and doesn't appear to be loose.

pulled the speedo off to look at it and see how it works. Also went to my local dodge dealer to see how much a new speedo was.....400 bucks!!!

Does anyone know if there is a way to have one overhauled? I don't wanna put in a new speedo with incorrect odometer. I've seen some clusters on Ebay for cheap, but they all have a significant more amount of miles. If I ever sell the truck I don't wanna have to explain why the truck only has 113k miles but the odometer says 200 somthing.
