Default Not shifting into first gear???

Tranny was rebuilt 50 000 km or so ago. The truck starts in 2 and will not downshift into 1 even with the manual selector. The only way is it run the truck from N at a stoplight and go directly to 1 than manual upshift. Anyone know what this could be?

Band adjustment, or broken/sliced band. Reverse is okay? There is a transmission sticky in the archives.

alright ill take a look, however ive been doing research and everyone is saying gov pressure sensor/solonoid. The truck was driving fine for two weeks after when i got it than all of a sudden i noticed it wont downshift and has no pickup.

Weirrd thing is, if i downshift manual to 1 on the selector it stays in 2 until i stop at the light than it goes to 1 when i have my foot on the brake and stopped. Is it possible there is too much pressure and wont downshift until some is released upon stop?

Try a can of Transtune made by Seafoam. I had this exact problem with my 1993 Grand Cherokee and it fixed it in a couple days....I couldn't believe it. The probably was allegedly dirt in the governor valve which the transtune cleaned out.

Well, the three things I know that are free are: a) Shifter rod adjustment b) TV cable adjustment and c) band adjustment. As far as the governor going out, it is plausible, but a bit more time intensive. If you did the above first and feel they are not the culpret then get a diagnosis at your trans specialist. You can visually see your tv link when your messing with the throttle, so if it is binding or sticking, you would need to address that first.

so this transtune stuff...do you need to change your fluid after a while? I cannot figure out how to adjust tv cable, mine looks different than the one in the sticky im sure its been adjusted when they rebuilt it. Like i said though if i bring it into 1 it will downshift but when im already stopped, it almost feels like it upshifts to 2 while sitting in D at a light but i dont know. I checked for codes and got 37 but that could have been from 2 years ago and not cleared, so i cleared the codes and since two days no CEL and no codes.

I think that you have a wire style TV cable going from your TB down the center of your tranny. It loops around to the driver side and passes through a clip on the tranny. The end of the wire caps onto a lever (ball and socket style), and when your accelerator moves forward the spring allows the tv lever to advance. The distance is important as there is some geometric relationships between the throttle being at WOT and the tv cable being about 1/16th from fully rearward. The adjustment procedure is in the sticky under the appropriate tranny, but the adjustment is made at the TB. The standard adjustment is when the accelerator cable starts to move forward, the TV cable starts to move. If you have the bar/rod type of linkage then it is even easier as you only have to loosen a bolt to adjust the linkage.

I would go for the Transtune, what do you have to lose?
