42 or 46 rh

How can you tell between the two visually

There is no way to know with out looking at the part numbers that are stamped onto it. The first thing to look at is what truck/engine it came off of. V8 is 46rh. V6 42rh some Ram V6's had a 46rh so part number would be best.

ok where on the trany would I find the numbers see I bought this truck used and there has been nothing in it that has been for a 95 everything has been changed for some other year most of it is a 92 and I am hoping that the trany might be a 46 rh probably not with my luck would love to put a nv 4500 in it

It is on the driver side, right above the oil pan. The service manual in the FAQ has a diagram.

Um, an obvious difference is the oil pan and 3rd high housing. The 46rh has a "wing" whereas the 42rh does not. The reason why I mention the 3rd high extention is that the 46rh has the exact same shape of oil pan as the older 727. A common swap to older mopar enthusiasts is to swap the pan from a newer model vehicle for extra oil.
