Transfer case?
So on the way home from work the other day the truck acted strange real quick. It clunked once or twice like it does every once in a while after putting it in gear or as the Haynes manual says "knock or clunk when transmission is under initial load (just after transmission is put into gear)" so I thought "crap..I was told my u joints are bad, maybe theyre finally going" so I put it in nuetral and coasted into a little dirt parking lot, got out and checked under the truck. Everything was sturdy so I got back in and spun both tires easy as hell in Drive and Reverse just to make sure nothing would break under pressure haha. Got it to my friends and called up my other friend to let him know I'd be coming by to check it out. So I get there and park it, shut it off, BS a lil, start it, into Reverse and truck doesnt move but it makes a low hum/grind so quickly back to park.."Well, it hasnt ever done that before...
" So my buddy got under and checked..no bad u joints..so back to reverse and drive..same thing, nothing, nothing, same thing, *insert slight grinding noise here*. Basically sat there trying this and that then he says hold on and puts it in 4HI, grind clunk eek, tries N, 4LO, 2HI in P, N, D...all the same or no sound at all and the truck still wont move no matter what. He says the Transfer Case is shot..happened in his 93 Dakota and his 96 Silverado and it sounded or acted the same with both. It does grind or clunk especially when trying to change into or out of 4WD and the engine DOES go under load when shifted into R or D. So your thoughts, my friends???

Pull the tail housing off. The snap ring on the output shaft probably came off. If it's been like that for a long time the t-case could be shot, mine has came off twice and luckily I noticed right away.
Might need to take you up on that lol. How much?
