Default Trans finally gave up!!! Death of a 42re!

If ya been readin my posts, your aware i put a 5.9 in place of my 3.9 last year! Well when i put my 5.9 in i kept the 42re trans and put type f fluid in it. It finally gave up!!! It went out with a whimper tho...it went to whining really loud and stopped pullin! I am now in the maket for a 46re!!!!lol......... No luck finding one as of yet!

LOL! Sorry but Dodge didn't put the 42re behind the 5.9 for a reason. Sorry you had to learn the hard way.

Does the 42re require Type F? I thought all Dodge transmissions took ATF 3+ or higher. If so was it the wrong fluid that killed it?

Yup 46re is the correct auto, 96-02 5.9's and some 5.2's but I'm not sure if all is interchangeable through out the years.
Or you can try for a manual swap NV3500 may be a little weak for a 5.9, a NV4500 would be best.

Its all kool! I knew it was gonna happen...ive studied this site for the past year and a half and every post i read was warning about the trans givin up if i kept the 42re in it but honestly I didnt think id get a year out of it! and NO i didnt baby it by any means!! as for addin a hemi R-n-R i have eaten up a Ram 2500 4X4 hemi,ITS ALL IN HOW YA BUILDEM & DRIVEM!!!lolol...

Crazy, no the fluid is wat got me the year pass! type f fluid has an anti slip agent in it that isnt found in other types of trans fluid! ATF+3 is the correct fluid for our trucks!
