Default Pronounced "clunk" when shifting from Park to Drive or Drive to Reverse

1992 V6 4X4....+150,000 miles- nope it's not the u-joint, i WISH IT WAS!

Crawled under and turned the shaft "appears" to be moving at the rear of the transmission where the driveshaft plugs in, but it could be the rear end?.... U joint appears solid.

Always something.

I was hoping one of you might have had the same problem.

From searching on here it looks like it's easier to swap the whole axle then try to rebuild it???

** If I have to replace it any suggestions that don't involve hundereds of $$$? Is there a rear end that is a direct bolt on that's stronger?

Most likely the ring gear has to much backlash. It is adjustable inside the diff.

Yes you could replace the axle. More work in my opinion. 87-96 will be best. Most likely you got a Chry 8.25 out back. If not its a Chry 7.25 which changing to a 8.25 will be an easy swap. Also the 8.25 came with 2 sizes of brake drums 9 and 10in. 10 in will be an upgrade from 9in. 4wd will need a 4wd axle and vise versa. They are changeable with more work.

If you want a little more strength a 2nd Gen axle will be good. Shock mounts will need to be custom done. The Chry 8.25 has a slightly more splines which equals more strength. Also the Chry 9.25 is available in some 2nd Gens. But some custom work is needed for both.

Chiltons/Haynes manuals are crap. Just use the Factory Service manual we have in the FAQ. Its free to download.

Your going to adjust the backlash. Just go to the rear axle section and look for the backlash.

Got it. Thanks. Looks like I'll have to put my thinking cap on to take this on. Very involved.

my 90 has been doing that for a few years. i would get someone to help locate just where the clunk is comming from. maybe get your head down there along side the truck and with break on shift in/out drive to N to reverse and make sure it is the rear end. i just assumed it is my tranny doing it.
