My Auto-trans is dying.....
Lost the overdrive awhile back, now it will only work if I massivly OVERFILL the trans.....Dammit. It has been overfilled since I got it. I tried to drain some off to match the dipstick and it just revs like in netural.
Repair: I don't know which trans is in it. As soon as I figure that out I'll get one and eather have it rebuilt or do it myself.
Next question- how had is it to rebuild one??
I'll put it in, I know how to do that at least.
Used a container of Lucas transfix to keep it going but I know it will fail in the near future, so I'd better get busy..............dammitt

well, you have the 42RH transmission and if you plan on swapping out with a junkyard unit, get any 42RH transmission from 1988-1996. They came in Dodge Ram V6 trucks and Ram Vans as well. You can also get the beefier 46RH that came in the V8s. Steer clear of 1996 and newer models as they have electronic controls whereas earlier models are hydraulic.
If you want to rebuild it, you can find a rebuild kit available online at ebay. You will need a special tool, a 20 ton hydraulic press. This will be needed to compress the 845 lb direct clutch coil spring in the overdrive unit. You will also needed both internal & external snap ring pliers (get the best, snap-on tools have the best snap ring pliers on earth, I swear by them), a dial indicator and a beville spring compressor.
I can't stress this enough, make sure your work area is super clean. A single granule of sand can destroy a transmission in less that 1,000 miles. Also clean out the cooler lines thoroughly and get a good quality torque converter. Also, have some lint free cloths on hand when rebuilding the valve body. I know I've just written a brief service manual, but if you feel confident in tackling on a rebuild, just take your time and take pictures and carefully do it.
