Default Speedometer jumping

For about the past month the speedometer in my 1993, dodge dakota v6 automatic 2wd, has been jumping around while driving and you can hear a high pitch rattling noise coming from the gauge. It did this once before but quit after a few days but this time it has only gotten worse. It seems to be keeping accurate mileage. Any ideas?

I bet you need a new gauge. Or you have a bad connection. Best bet is to dig in and take a look. The local pull-a-part around here only charges $25 for the entire gauge cluster. Good luck

Most likely it is the speedo cable. Just replace it, Napa has them for cheep. I replaced mine last year $20 or so, and very simple to do.

You think? Even with the gauge making that noise he described? Either way though, there's only 3 things involved that I'm aware of. Gauge, cable or sensor. I've only dealt with this on Honda's though.

could be the cable, or the gears in the gauge. My gf's 93's speedo acts up if its too hot outside and clicks and jumps. Makes a sound like the gears are skipping in the speedo. Could be another possibility

Thanks for the suggestions, ill take a look at the cable first and if that's not it ill look at the speedo its self.
