Default Random shutdown

Hi all,
I've got a problem and I'm going to try my best to describe it. I've run out of options and no one seems to have an answer. Possibly you might have a suggestion?

1992 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6 4x4

The vehicle will shutoff while driving, without any warning symptoms. No signs of choking, misfire, nothing. After the vehicle dies, the car will crank and crank, but not start. I must switch the key to the off position prior to re-starting the vehicle. This happens whether I'm driving 65mph, 10mph, at idle or when I go to start the vehicle. No codes are given.

The symptom lasts from 5 seconds to 7 minutes.

I can tell when the car is ready to start again because when I switch the key from off to on

A) The check engine light will appear
B) The over-drive switch light will illuminate when pressed
C) The tach will go as high as 1k to 2k then back to 0.

The problem and symptoms lead me to believe that the ground to the ASD relay is being interrupted. I'm not sure if the ECU or the Pickup/Hall Effect is causing this.

Here's a list of what I have replaced:
MAP sensor
Speed sensor
Crank Position sensor
Cap
Rotor (after it broke - metal from plastic seperated)
Plugs
O2 sensor
CAT converter
Fuel Pump
ASD relay
Fuel Pump Relay

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sure sounds like the notorious splices. Check the FAQ in this section for full details including locations and picture. It is just a few posts above this one.

I'm with Crazy4x4RT on this. That's the splice problem. If the check engine light doesn't work when the truck won't start, thats means the PCM isn't getting power, which is exactly what mine did when I bought it. Look into the FAQ for more info

Fixed

I went through the wiring harness starting at the power distribution center and I found a ground that was corroded and broken for the AC, starter and ASD relay. I also found a splice between the Fuel Pump and ASD relay (blue wire w/ yellow stripe) that was corroded as well.

I need to do the same thing with my 1992 dakota 3.9v6 auto, my wires are rusting in weird places after going to the beach. Where is the ASD relay and fuel pump located. And which power distribution center are you talking about, there are like 3 places under the hood I feel like this could be. I printed out some of the wiring diagrams from the faq and they are hard to decipher. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

i actually had a similar problem recently.... thing was it wasnt a splice issue. it was a bad connection for the ignition fuse in the BCM! I spent 3weeks and 96 bucks on a problem that was as simple as switching some fuse's around. good luck hope this helps
