Default Gen 1, 22 Gallon Fuel Tank.. will it fit ?

Hi All !

Anyone know if the 22gal fuel tank will fit in a 90 dak convertible ?

Looking at the existing tank, It appears that there is not much additional room.

Does the 22 gal tank only fit with full size beds ? Is it simply a longer tank ?

I'd love to have a bigger tank... 15 gal is a curse on the highway.

Cheers !

I have the 87 V6 3.9L 8ft bed, and it came with a 22gallon tank. I dont think it matters much the size of the cab/bed, since the frame is similar underneath. Cant be sure, but i would think it would fit. Inevitably, crazy4x4 will post here with a brilliant answer, give it a few hours and dont give up hope.

Hi Mulder25,

The frame is a different length for each cab/box configuration.
111.9 in (2,842 mm) <-reg cab, short box i.e. convertible
123.9 in (3,147 mm)
130.9 in (3,325 mm) (ext. cab)

hmmm...
Judging from those numbers, that extra 12" wheelbase could make all the difference.
7 gallons is 1,617 cubic inches which would require extra space of around 12" x 12" x 11"

I think I'll have to go crawl under the truck and see what the current tank's dimensions are, and how much room is available.

Crazy4x4RT ? hehe yeah he does seem to run the place..

I would assume it would fit. But to double check find some to take measurements and see if it would work. Here are some pics of the tanks.

I hope my answer qualifies for brilliant, but I'm not to sure.

Is that good or bad? LOL

Here is a 15 Gallon tank.

Here is a 22 Gallon tank.

The green arrow points to the lip that only the 22 has.

I cant imagine that they would make any model of the first generation dakota not capable of having a 22 gallon tank. That is one of the great things about the truck, i think the shape of it, with that lip, is what allows it to. There is probably a part of the frame in the way, and the lip is designed to clear it. I know my tank is really long, and not a whole lot wider.

Thanks for the info and pics.

A mopar service manager, contacted me after I posted, and he has confirmed the 22 gallon tank was available as an option for the short box/regular cab 1st gen dakotas

Any idea if the fuel pump assembly can be simply swapped from a 15 gallon tank and somehow adjusted so that the fuel guage is in the ballpark ?

Any idea if the same heat shield and skid plate were used on both 15 and 22 gal tanks ?

I wish my local wreckers had some old dakotas

I'm not to sure if the sending units are the same. But go to www.autozone.com and see if it gives the same part number for both gas tank sizes. The 22 skid plate and heat shield will be longer than the 15.

Thanks crazy4x4 !

I checked autozone and rockauto and neither list the part, they only seem to sell the pump itself. I'll see if i can find some other listing on the web or go beg my local shop to look it up.

Sad to hear about the skid plate and shield... was hoping that the existing one was already oversized.
Looks like I may have to drive over the border to find a complete unit. All the local wreckers that I know of, have crushed the gen1 dakotas they had.

UPDATE: Spectra (aftermarket pump mfg) doesn't list the part for the gen1 dakotas.
UPDATE: Airtex only lists the pump or strainer, not the whole module or the sending unit.
UPDATE: based on an estimation from comparing the 15 gal tank to the photo of the 22 gal., the skid plate works for both.
"Only" the heat shield, tank and fuel assembly are needed for a swap
