Sounds like a bad wiring connection or a bad float sending unit. The FAQ has a write up on swapping in a new float.
Would a bad float sending unit cause the gas gauge to only act up during certain spots in the tank? For example, from 3/4's of a tank to 1/2 a tank, my gauge will go all over the map, but above 3/4's, or under 1/2, the gauge works fine..

Yes if there is a bad spot on the resister board, which is common since it can rub off over time.
