When I backup at night ,I can hardly see with my oem light bulbs.How can I brighten my view behind me?Do I need to get external under bumper lights?Are there any replacement bulbs that are better?94 Dakota.I have 1156 lamps.

 

Better bulbs, not really. Get a set of fog lights and wire them off the reverse lights. 2 suggestions, 1) put a switch on the dash to disable them so they don't always go on in reverse if you don't want them, and 2) run a relay off the reverse lights to trigger them only in reverse with direct power from a switched source.

 

Or just run them off a switch to turn them on when you need them. It could come in handy in other circumstances other than just backing up.

 

You could also look on ebay for some high power white 1156 LED bulbs.
Ive already got LED Brake lights but not high powered ones.
if they were a bit cheaper i would have switched them all already

 

I've got a couple rubberized trapezoidal beam tractor lights under the bumper, works great and they've been there for 4 years.

Tap the reverse wire under the dash and ignition switched wire, hook it up to a on/off/on switch, to a relay.

 

I agree on the tractor lights, got mine at W.World for about 12 bucks. Since they are not DOT approved inspection requires removal, but the lights are a great improvement over stock. I had one State Trooper question them and he was satisfied that they only worked when in reverse. Yes he could have given me a ticket but he was one of those with a brain and understood.

 

Are led's brighter than halogens?

 

Depends on what you buy. I had halogens on chinajunk scooter. I read the LED would be brighter. I bought what Advanced showed as being equal LED and took them right back off. You can get small round 50watt 12 volt halogen that will definately light up your backing area for $20 to $30. You also can position the lights in the holder so the beam is horizontal after you choose your mounting position, which gives you the ability to have a well lit conentrated beam area. The Tractor light mentioned in prior post gives a good light, softer than the halogens but has a larger spread pattern. Either choice would be better than the stock back up lights.

 

Depends on the quality, arrangement and number of LED's.

 

I also have the tractor lights on mine. They are really bright, but I am thinking about adding these all around.
