It is for pollution control, but not just that. You need it to be working properly. It tells the computer how much fuel to feed the engine. I guess you could say it controls pollution by making your engine run more efficiently.

Man thats some low MPGs. I have a 5.2 with no O2 sensors, no exhaust for that matter, have tuned er up and I get 13, town, highway, driveway or otherwise

I was also getting 13, but after replacing some sensors, I jumped up to 20 mpg and then settled at 17 for an average. And I drive with a heavy foot.

LOL if we take a look at the weight of these trucks and look at what we carry is 20 mpg or better that bad compared to the small people movers that are getting 30 to 40mpg?

Back to the 02 Sensor, so is it possible when the cat was removed the O2 sensor would have gone as well?

Possibly, but the o2 is before the cat. Would only take a second to crawl under and look. Can't miss it, it's the only wired thing on the exhaust.
