Hello,
i have a Dakota '96 with only 23k miles.
the engine is 3.9 magnum.

the fuel consumption is not like i expected.

i can do about 11-12 mpg.

Check it for codes. There is a write up in the FAQ. My o2 sensor was causing my bad gas mileage.

By the way, I envy your location.

Check out this link for mpg ratings.I have it set for the '96 Dakota, but you can do them all.

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymod...a_Pickup.shtml

I know this doesn't answer your question but it will give you something to shoot for.

New O2 sensor, spark plugs, air filter, clogged cat, and keep tires inflated...just to name a few common things to check/replace

Where is the 02 sensor located and is it just for pollution control?

on magnum engines (1992-1996) it's mounted in the tank with the fuel pump module assembly.

The Oxygen Sensor is on the exhaust pipe just above the Cat.

I think you might be thinking of something else.
